Glady’s Porter Zoo received its first Toucan in over 20 years.
Tookie is a keel-billed toucan, which is slightly different from the toco toucan that people associate with Toucan Sam, the Fruit Loops mascot.
Keel-billed toucans can be found from Southern Mexico all the way down to Northwestern South America.
In a quote to the Brownsville Herald, GPZ’s curator of birds Toni Torres describes how both the keel-billed and toco toucan were in the zoo’s collection plan and that we’re actually getting Tookie a little sooner than anticipated.
Importantly, as a keel-billed toucan, Tookie is considered “near threatened” so she’s being treated as a Species Survival Plan animal to try and get her a mate soon. This would be great for the public as it means we get an extra toucan at GPZ and obviously great for Tookie as well.
On a broader note, this is the first toucan we’ve had in over 20 years and she’ll be joining GPZ’s current extensive aviary collection featuring varieties of macaws, flamingos and ostriches.
