13 Oct Randy Christian, Former Lubbock District 5 Councilman, Dies at 74
Randy Christian, who represented District 5 on the Lubbock City Council for one term, died late Sunday, Oct. 11, at 74. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, he had been in a long fight with cancer.
Christian, a local businessman who worked in marketing, held the seat from 2018 to 2022. The city said he put much of his energy in office into public health and the revitalization of downtown. The Avalanche-Journal also reports he pushed for more spending on city parks.
His family confirmed his death in a Facebook post Monday, according to the paper. They thanked everyone who supported him, said the messages he received while sharing updates about his health meant a great deal to him, and asked for prayers as they say goodbye.
In a statement of its own, the City of Lubbock remembered him as a kind and loving man and said many at City Hall are mourning him. Mayor Mark McBrayer said Christian served the city well in many roles, not only on the council, and sent his sympathies to the family, per the Avalanche-Journal. The council had planned a moment of silence for him at its meeting, which began at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
He also pushed the city to launch Source to Solution in 2019, a regional symposium on addiction and recovery. The city said he was motivated by his own personal experiences. The event now takes place every year, hosted by the Lubbock Public Health District, and gives people affected by addiction access to resources, fellowship and information. The seventh one is set for Friday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
He had adopted the motto “Lucky Me, I Live in Lubbock,” and the city said he truly believed it. The city said that pride in the community drove both his civic work and his personal efforts.
