Woman Charged With Intoxication Manslaughter After Deadly Crash on Coffee Road in Brownsville

A 24-year-old man died and a 26-year-old woman was arrested after a Tuesday night crash on Coffee Road in Brownsville, according to the Brownsville Police Department.

Dania Martinez appeared to be intoxicated, police say. She faces a second-degree felony count of intoxication manslaughter and a third-degree felony count of intoxication assault, for allegedly causing serious bodily injury with a vehicle. A judge set her bond at $55,000 Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the 2300 block of Coffee Road around 9:10 p.m. Early information shows Martinez was driving a white Suburban west when a gray Elantra pulled out of a private driveway heading east, and the two collided.

The Elantra’s driver, Daniel Morin, 24, was among four people taken to a hospital. He died there.

The investigation is ongoing.

If she’s convicted, intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony in Texas, carries two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Intoxication assault, a third-degree felony, carries two to 10 years and the same maximum fine. Those are the ranges for each count, not a prediction of what a sentence would be, and she hasn’t been convicted of anything.

For context, Texas’ 20-year maximum for intoxication manslaughter is higher than California’s 10 years and Florida’s 15.
