Student in Custody After Gun Found at Brownsville Early College High School

A Brownsville Early College High School student is in custody after being found with a gun on campus Wednesday, Brownsville ISD said.

The school was locked down right away, and the district says the student was taken into custody safely. The campus is adjacent to Texas Southmost College.

Brownsville police are handling the investigation. The district hasn’t identified the student, and it’s unclear what charges, if any, the student faces.

It’s not the first gun scare at a BISD campus this year. In August, a loaded handgun belonging to a parent turned up on an 8-year-old at Aiken Elementary, and the parent was arrested, according to the district. In April, Rivera Early College High School went on lockdown over a report of a student with a weapon. The district said no weapon was found, and a 17-year-old was charged over the false report.

In its statement, BISD thanked its own police force, Brownsville PD and the other agencies that responded to Wednesday’s incident. It also asked parents to talk with their kids about speaking up when something seems off, and to go through backpacks regularly. The district’s reminder to families: see something, say something.
