30 Oct Edinburg officer shot Thursday is stable after surgery; police identify gunman
The Edinburg police officer shot several times Thursday while responding to a domestic disturbance is stable following surgery, the city announced Friday.
The city described the officer as a 40-year-old with four years on the force. The officer’s name has not been released.
Police also named the man who fired on officers as Daby Tadeo Ledezma, 25, of Edinburg, and corrected his age, which they had first given as 21. Ledezma apparently shot himself and died. A court in North-Central Texas had issued a warrant against him for a probation violation, police said.
Ledezma had a handgun and a rifle when officers reached the West Oak Apartments on Fig Drive, according to Police Chief Jaime Ayala. One of his two sisters, who live with him, had phoned 911 to say he was behaving erratically.
Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, and the department’s Internal Affairs Division is reviewing policies. Detectives are still interviewing the sisters, Ayala said.
