08 Oct Ex-Muleshoe Teacher Held Without Bond in Student Enticement Case
Former Muleshoe High School teacher Allegra Fey Mora will remain in federal custody while awaiting trial on charges of enticing a minor, a judge ruled in Lubbock federal court. U.S. Magistrate Judge Amanda Burch granted the government’s motion to detain the 28-year-old, finding her a danger to the community after prosecutors presented evidence of a hidden sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Mora, who pleaded not guilty to enticement of a minor, faces 10 years to life in federal prison if convicted. A tentative trial date has been set for Dec. 7. Defense attorney Geoffrey Puryear argued for her release, noting her compliance while out on a $15,000 state bond following her initial arrest in June. However, Judge Burch emphasized that Mora’s disregard for basic boundaries between educator and student outweighed her brief compliance on state bond.
Court records stemming from a Texas Rangers investigation reveal the two engaged in sexual acts on campus and on chaperoned speech trips after meeting when the student was 15. Investigators uncovered over 5,800 combined calls and text messages detailing their sexual encounters, deleted communications, and discussions about the risk of prison. The student told investigators Mora described him as her “soulmate” and her only way out of Muleshoe.
Mora initially faced state charges of an improper relationship between a student and a teacher before a federal grand jury indicted her in September. Federal prosecutor Callie Woolam argued for detention, emphasizing that video calls between Mora and the minor elevated her criminal exposure and created a potential flight risk.
The case marks a high-profile prosecution under the Justice Department’s “Project Safe Schools” initiative in the Northern District of Texas. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould stated his office will aggressively prosecute educators and school officials who abuse authority over minors or conceal misconduct.
