07 Oct Brownsville’s Hurtado Secures Top-10 Finish in 200-Mile Ultramarathon
Brownsville ultrarunner Art Hurtado finished eighth overall at the Cowboy 200, traversing 200 miles across Nebraska with a time of 54:18:23 over the weekend of Sept. 25–27.
The 200-mile course traces the historic Cowboy Trail between Norfolk and Valentine along a flat, crushed-limestone railway path closed to motor vehicles. The scenic route takes runners past legacy railroad infrastructure and across historic bridges through the state’s rural back-country.
The event marked Hurtado’s debut at the 200-mile distance. Hurtado, who supervises the lifeguard crew at Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island, managed roughly two hours of sleep over the three-day effort. Despite the extreme sleep deprivation and physical strain, he reported no major injuries and quickly resumed his normal work routine.
A five-member crew, including Josh Meier, Mariana Morales, Greg Fuhrman, and Eric and Liz Castillo from Los Rukos Barbell Club, supported Hurtado along the trail. Race regulations restricted support crews to designated aid stations, where pacers were allowed to join him on foot. Morales accompanied Hurtado for the initial 22 miles, while Meier paced various legs, including the final 25-mile stretch to the finish line.
Although aid stations along the route offered sleeping bunks for rest, an unexpected fire alarm at one stop cut Hurtado’s rest short, forcing him to get back on the trail early.
On his drive back to the airport in Omaha following the event, Hurtado noted that his route closely paralleled the trail he had just run, offering him a visual perspective on the vast distance covered. Now regarding himself as an established ultrarunner, he plans to tackle another 200-mile event near Dallas next year.
