24-year-old charged with murder in fatal Corpus Christi shooting that also wounded a woman

Corpus Christi police have charged a 24-year-old man with murder in a Wednesday afternoon shooting on the Westside that left one man dead and a woman wounded, according to the police department and an arrest affidavit.

John Guerra, 24, told investigators during questioning that he shot the man, the affidavit says. Jail records show he was booked early Thursday into the Nueces County Jail, with bail set at $700,000.

Officers were sent to the 3500 block of Ayers Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. on reports of gunfire. Inside an apartment off Blanco Court, they found a woman who had been hit in the left upper arm, with Guerra by the door, the affidavit says. An officer put a tourniquet on her arm to slow the bleeding, and she was then taken to a hospital. Police said her injuries were not life-threatening.

The man was found with several gunshot wounds in the 1400 block of East Street and later died at a hospital. Investigators also seized guns belonging to Guerra and to the dead man, according to the affidavit, and police said several people were detained at the scene.

In the account Guerra gave investigators, as described in the affidavit, he was asleep when shots rang out. He said he then learned the woman had been shot by another man, took his own gun and followed the man outdoors through La Armada. After rounding a corner, he said, he heard what sounded to him like the man preparing to shoot again, and he fired, hitting the man. The description comes from what Guerra told investigators. The court records give no reason for the first gunfire and do not describe how those involved were connected.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to officially confirm the dead man’s identity, and the woman has not been named. Police said the investigation is active and ongoing.
