Corpus Christi begins two-year, $15.8 million rebuild of Alameda Street on Nov. 4

Construction on a $15.8 million rebuild of Alameda Street in Corpus Christi starts Wednesday, Nov. 4, and is expected to last about two years, according to a city announcement. The work, paid for with the city’s 2022 bond, covers the stretch between Airline Road and Everhart Road.

The first phase will close the westbound lanes of Alameda between Airline and Eldon Drive and shift two-way traffic onto the eastbound side. That setup is scheduled to last until May 2027, when crews will move to the other half of the road. The city said detours will be marked and drivers should follow the posted signs.

Crews will tear out the old roadway and replace it with concrete pavement, along with new curbs, gutters and sidewalks, curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, upgraded streetlights, signs, pavement markings and traffic signals. Stormwater, water and wastewater lines beneath the street will also be upgraded. Later phases will extend the work onto neighboring segments of Avalon Street and Robert Drive.

The city said it has notified businesses and schools in the corridor and that they will remain accessible throughout construction.

Some owners are worried about what the disruption will do to sales, according to KIII. Paul Gonzalez, owner of The Patio, which is connected to the restaurant Eirinis Gyros and More, said the work will hurt but he expects the business to survive. He and his partners are considering sending customers through the back parking lot, and he urged residents to choose local businesses over large chains. Elena Flores, who owns the gift shop Sew Bonita, said she learned from the city only recently that work would begin the following week, as holiday shopping picks up and Small Business Saturday approaches. She said she supports the project and hopes shoppers keep coming to Alameda Street businesses.
