Jon Ruiz, 17, named as victim in Westside shooting that led to murder charge against 24-year-old

The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the person killed in Wednesday’s Westside shooting in Corpus Christi as 17-year-old Jon Ruiz.

John Guerra, 24, was charged with murder. Jail records list him as booked early Thursday, with bail of $700,000, and he was in custody as of Friday.

Officers were dispatched near Ayers Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after callers reported gunfire. An arrest affidavit says they found a woman shot in the left upper arm inside an apartment off Blanco Court and located Ruiz with multiple gunshot wounds on East Street, in the 1400 block. Each was taken to a hospital, where Ruiz later died. Police said the woman’s wound was not life-threatening.

The affidavit says Guerra told investigators that he shot Ruiz. He said he had been asleep when the first shots were fired, took his own gun after learning the woman had been hit and followed the man outside, where he fired after hearing what sounded like the man getting ready to shoot again. The affidavit gives no reason for the first gunfire and does not describe how those involved knew one another. Investigators seized guns belonging to Guerra and Ruiz.

The woman has not been publicly identified. Police said the investigation is active and ongoing.
