14 Oct Big Spring Man Arrested on Murder Charge After Chase on U.S. 87
Elizabeth Cervantes, 38, was found dead at a Howard County home, and a few hours later the man investigators had pegged as a suspect was in custody after a pursuit along U.S. 87, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
It began with a 9:27 a.m. call about a domestic disturbance at a house on Debra Lane. Deputies from the Howard County Sheriff’s Office who showed up found Cervantes dead. The Texas Rangers came in to work the case with the sheriff’s office, and the investigation led them to Zyon Gonzalez, 49, of Big Spring. The belief was that he was driving a blue Chevy pickup toward Lamesa. DPS didn’t say how Cervantes died or how Gonzalez ended up a suspect.
Around 12:10 p.m., a DPS trooper noticed a truck that looked like the one Gonzalez was believed to be driving, going north on the highway toward Lamesa. Police from Lamesa and sheriff’s deputies from Dawson County joined in, but DPS says the driver, who turned out to be Gonzalez, refused to stop. Troopers fired their service weapons at the truck during the chase, but that didn’t stop it.
The pursuit finally ended around 12:40 p.m. in Dawson County at mile marker 318, when a trooper hit the truck, bringing it to a halt. Gonzalez bailed out and ran into the roadway, DPS says, but a trooper stunned him and took him into custody.
Gonzalez is now in the Howard County jail on a murder charge. DPS says the investigation into her death is ongoing.
