Edinburg Man Gets 60 Years in Severe Domestic Abuse Case

An Edinburg jury sentenced 45-year-old Jorge Luis Ramos to 60 years in prison following his conviction on multiple severe charges, including aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a family member with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint involving exposure to serious bodily injury, continuous violence against the family, assault of a pregnant person, and assault of a family member with a prior conviction.

The case originated on Dec. 2, 2024, when neighbors contacted Edinburg police after hearing Ramos assaulting, threatening, and taunting his pregnant girlfriend inside an apartment. Arriving officers discovered the victim suffering from extensive physical trauma across her face and body.

Medical evaluations revealed a fractured nose, a facial laceration requiring eight stitches, severe facial swelling and bruising, widespread bodily contusions, multiple cigarette burns, and a distinct leg burn that left an imprint reading “MADE IN INDIA, STAINLESS STEEL.”

Subsequent law enforcement investigation determined that Ramos had held the victim captive inside his apartment for approximately a week. Throughout her captivity, Ramos repeatedly attacked her using his hands, feet, a knife, lit cigarettes, and two unopened beer bottles. He also struck her with a heated stainless steel pan and poured alcohol on her in an attempt to set her on fire.

Commenting on the verdict, Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios emphasized that the ruling reinforces that domestic abuse is a criminal offense rather than a private dispute, stating that the district attorney’s office will continue seeking justice and accountability for victims.
