12 Oct Laredo Mayor Asks City to Inspect Canizales Boxing Gym
Laredo Mayor Victor Trevino has asked the city to inspect the Canizales Boxing Gym, a city-owned recreation center, following concerns about its ceilings, walls and other areas of the building used by boxers, according to the Laredo Morning Times.
The city-run gym is a longtime fixture of Laredo boxing, named for world bantamweight champions Orlando and Gaby Canizales. It got a major expansion in 2014, and Orlando, an IBF champion and Hall of Famer, still works with young fighters there.
Trevino toured the facility Oct. 6 and afterward tasked City Manager Joe Neeb with assessing the building. He wants to know whether it meets safety and health requirements, and he wants repairs made if it falls short.
He also wants Neeb to report back to the City Council on what he finds and which repairs he recommends. Trevino proposed paying for part of the work with his priority funds.
Trevino, a physician, tied the request to health. He said the young boxers, their coaches and their families should be able to train without worry, and that as both a doctor and mayor, their well-being is his top concern.
